Bezwada Wilson

Bezwada Wilson is an Indian activist belonging to the group of Dalits. The Dalits are known as the ‘untouchables’ as they are considered unclean, impure and placed at the lowest level of the traditional caste hierarchy. Wilson leads a crusade to abolish the dehumanising practice of manual scavenging: the degrading and illegal task of cleaning human excrement from India’s roads and dry latrines. Bezwada Wilson was born in Karnataka’s Kolar district where he started teaching his community about his struggle against the caste system. He is a national convener of Safai Karamchari Andolan (SKA), a nationwide movement aimed at eradicating manual scavenging in India by 2010.

We will establish a live connection with Bezwada Wilson in India.
