Masterclass: Relief work and globalisation

Attention: This is a masterclass! Preliminary knowledge is not required, but you are expected to prepare yourself by studying a syllabus.

By registering for this masterclass, you will get the unique opportunity of personally discussing the effects of globalisation on relief work, with international expert Steven Loyst. Before the start of the conference a syllabus of approx. 75 pages will be sent to you, containing texts proposed by the speaker.

Over the past decades, the world has become more interconnected. Developments in one part of the world can carry considerable consequences in other parts of the world. Furthermore, due to increased media presence, developments throughout the world have become more, and more quickly, visible to a large population. This had lead to a growing awareness of what goes on in parts of the world other than where one resides, resulting in an emerging sense of plight, as well as international (political) involvement, to provide assistance where needed (a well-known example is the 1980s famine in the tormented region of Darfur, Sudan).

International relief organisations, such as the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, are operative in a large number of countries. How does globalisation affect, and has affected, their work? Does it, albeit to a certain extent, stipulate their level and type of involvement?
