Reine Alapini-Gansou
Mrs. Reine Alapini-Gansou is Chairperson of the African Commission for Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR). In her former function as Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders, she was concerned with the status of human rights activists in Africa. The ACPHR was established by the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights which came into force on 21 October 1986 after its adoption in Nairobi (Kenya) in 1981 by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). The ACPHR is charged with ensuring the promotion and protection of Human and Peoples' Rights throughout the African Continent. The Commission has its headquarters in Banjul, The Gambia.
Mrs. Reine Alapini-Gansou will give a lecture on the ACPHR; in what way does the ACPHR operate and does it have any judicial power? Moreover, Mrs. Reine Alapini Gansou will talk about the situation of human rights activists in Africa and the way in which the ACHPR is able to help these activists in their struggle.
