Tariq Ramadan
Tariq Said Ramadan is born in Geneva, Switzerland as son of a prominent Muslim of Egyptian descent. After graduating in philosophy and French literature at Geneva University, he studied Arab and Islamic Science at Al Azhar University in Cairo.
Currently, Prof. Ramadan holds office on Oxford University, as well as on Doshisha University in Kyoto. As a leading Muslim theologist, he regularly speaks at conferences all around the world and contributes to public discussion through newspapers such as The Guardian. He wrote 8 books on Islam and its relation with the West. On January 1, 2007, he was appointed professor in the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, where he held the chair of Identity and Citizenship, focusing on connecting different sections of the city’s population. Last August 18, Mr Ramadan was dismissed from this function, due to his performance on a controversial Iranian television channel. His discharge raised fierce criticism from the academic world, directed at the Erasmus University.
