Women and Islam

The call for the protection of women has been there in all times and ages. In the Muslim world, different atrocities occur, like marrying off young women, genital circumcision and domestic violence. These atrocities are often the result of the Sharia. In different parts of the world, women’s rights are in conflict with cultural and religious rights. The question is what organisations can do to improve the status of women’s rights and in what way? Which problems deserve the everlasting attention? Moreover, there is a difference between the status of women’s rights in the East, compared to the status of women’s rights in the West. Are there any difference between Muslimahs in the East and in the West, with regard to their legal positon? Are Muslimahs in the West more self-confident and does this mean their rights are better protected?
