Yahoo in China

A confronting image on how an American internet provider deems economic interest more fundamental than the non-violation of human rights, is how the short documentary “Yahoo, in China” can best be outlined.

Director Michel Lemaur shows that technological development does not always go hand in hand with safeguarding freedom and privacy, and that in some cases opposite developments occur. As in China.

Journalist Shi Tao sent, using Yahoo, a message to an address located in the United States. In this e-mail he elaborated on the measures of the Chinese government concerning the memorial of the bloodbath which took place at The Gate of Heavenly Peace, Tiananmen Square, during the student protests of 1989. As a direct consequence the journalist was arrested and in 2005 convicted to ten years in prison.

The documentary highlights Yahoo’s involvement in these proceedings and sparks a discussion on, more broadly, the comparative assessment of many Western companies of the furtherance of their economic interests versus human rights. Michel Lemaur raises attention to Western contributions to censorship and repression, and offers those opposing these developments a chance to speak out.

English shall be the language of communication during this part of the progamme.
